 Middle School Mathematics
Mathematics 6 Pre-Algebra
Mathematics 7

Wisconsin Virtual School’s Middle School Courses provide three paces in which a student may complete the courses. The students are recommended to work with their parent, school, guidance counselor, or local education guide (LEG) to determine the pace that fits their need. To help determine the pace choice for the course, consider your academic needs and how much time you can devote to the online course. More details on pacing

Mathematics 6

This is a full year of middle school math curriculum for grade 6 level students.

Did you know that zebras are black with white stripes?  Or that kangaroos can only move forward?  Zookeepers know these things, and so will you when you use some basic math skills as the zookeeper of your own virtual zoo.   You値l also find out that math is really important for figuring out real world problems like how much food and space your animals will need.

In this course you値l learn about numbers, fractions, percentages, and data analysis.  You値l also see how geometry and solving problems with algebra will help keep your animals and the humans who visit your zoo happy.  You値l even have a pet toucan, who will help make learning math fun.

You値l find dozens of animals in your zoo.  You値l also find that the mathematical concepts and processes learned in this course will make you a better student, and better worker in any profession you may choose.

Mathematics 7

Sometimes the best way to learn mathematics is to see how it is used.  To do that, we have a lot of great field trips planned for you.  Among the interesting places you値l visit are an airport, an amusement park, a golf course, and an elections office.  At each place, you値l learn important math concepts and how they apply to the real world.

In this course, you値l learn how to estimate and measure quantities, describe what痴 happening with graphs and algebraic equations, and use statistics to make predictions.  You値l even use your knowledge of area, perimeter and circumference to map out a park near you.

Math is everywhere!  The purpose of this course is to help you see the thousands of ways it is used.  You値l also learn lots of math tools for solving problems and for creating your own new ways to use math.

Pre-Algebra (Math 8)

This is a full year of middle school math curriculum for grade 8 level students.

If you like music, then you will love math; well, almost.  The truth is, every musical note can be measured by its frequency and every drumbeat can be measured by an interval of time.  It took hundreds of years to create the musical scales we have today, but you can be sure that someone had to do the math.

In this course, you値l learn about numbering systems, measurement, data analysis, geometry and algebra.  You値l see that music and many other human activities depend on getting the numbers right.  You値l interact with course materials, visit websites, participate in hands-on activities, and watch instructional videos.  You値l even get to create your own music CD cover using your geometric skills.

Math and music are not exactly the same.  But in this course, you値l find that math can be a lot of fun, and solving problems can be very satisfying.  You値l also learn that math can be a part of your life that is at least as important as music.
