Courses taught at WVS:
AP Environmental Science
Teacher Certification:
Environmental Studies (615), Biology/Life Science (605)
and Broadfield Science (601). Age range: Early
Adolescence to Adolescence (ages 10 – 21).
Educational Experience:
I received my B.A. in Biology from Reed College,
Portland, OR and my M.S. and Ph.D. in Ecology from
University of California, Davis, CA. I have 3 ˝ years
of science teaching experience at the high school level
and over 15 years at the college and graduate level. I
enjoy teaching diverse student learner populations
(At-Risk, Gifted and Talented, and Adult Learners).
I also have 2 years of online teaching experience,
having designed and instructed two fully online science
courses for graduate students in the Masters in
Environmental Education program at UW-Stevens Point. I
currently work in faculty support and training for
online instruction at the Teaching & Learning
Resource Network at UW-Stevens Point. My
scientific research specialty area is wildlife disease
ecology and I am currently studying canine heartworm in
Wisconsin wolves, coyotes and foxes.
Personal Info/Hobbies:
As an ecologist, I find joy in time spent in nature and
prefer the “quiet sports” such as nature hiking, bird
watching, canoeing, cross-country skiing and GeoCaching.
I’m also an avid reader of science fiction, a jazz and
blues music enthusiast and the family historian
(genealogist).
Personal Statement about Online Teaching:
It is very rewarding to know that the flexibility of the
online teaching and learning environment allows
instructors to better meet the needs of diverse student
learners. I think one of the future challenges for the
teaching of online science courses is to find creative
strategies to more successfully replicate the
traditional hands-on laboratory and field component in
the online environment.
