Personal Statement about Online Learning:
I’ve
been facilitating online classes for over five years.
In that time I’ve witnessed marvelous achievements by
both academically challenged, and academically gifted
students. The concept of learning at your own pace, at
any time, and at any place appeals to students. They
take ownership of their learning by setting goals,
creating pace charts, and communicating with me as a
partner in their virtual environment.
During that time a young lady initially told me she
hated school, hated reading, and was only taking the
course to graduate. As we communicated throughout the
course she began to change her point of view. She was
able to complete lessons at a pace she was comfortable
with, repeat lessons until she mastered them, and for
the first time, experience success in this learning
environment. I treasure the letter she wrote to me
after she successfully completed the class. She
insisted that I come to her graduation. She told me she
wouldn’t have graduated without my help and patience
with her. Responses like this are the ultimate reward
for an online facilitator.
At
the other end of the spectrum I witness academically
gifted students not only passing a course, but
surpassing the expectations of the course. They request
extra credit projects that are beyond the realm of the
course, and essentially create their own online class
suited to their individual needs. Their full potential
is realized using techniques and materials that only
online classes can offer. Online classes have certainly
taken their place as one of the best options schools can
offer students.
