Aviation Course Descriptions

Course Name:               Fundamentals of Aviation Science

Course Length:              One Semester 

Course credit:                2 College credits (Utah Valley State College)
                                    Graduation credit determined at local High School

Grades:                         10, 11, & 12   (9 with permission)

Prerequisites:                Recommended: Algebra, Biology, Chemistry or Physics

Textbook required:         An online version of the textbook Aerospace: The Journey of Flight, Civil Air Patrol, 2000 is supplied with the course. A hardcover textbook can be purchased by contacting Beth Maul at 1-800-221-1264 or cap@vanguardmil.com.

Description: Fundamentals of Aviation Science is a semester course covering the basic principles of flight and aircraft systems.  Students will learn about airplane structure, flight instruments, aerodynamic principles, aviation history and the flight environment.  Emphasis is on the application of the science principles inherent in the subject along with opportunities to explore aviation careers. Students enrolled in this course will be provided with opportunities to fly in a small aircraft.  The course includes a student EAA membership providing special benefits and aviation opportunities.  This course is generally accepted as a Science Elective by secondary institutions, but not in place of biology, chemistry, physics, etc.  Field trips for this course may require a nominal fee for transportation and admissions. Course Name:   Advanced Aviation Science

Course Length:  One Semester

Course credit:    4 College credits (Utah Valley State College)
                        Graduation credit determined at local High School

Grades:             10, 11, & 12

Prerequisite:      Fundamentals of Aviation Science

Textbook required:         An online version of the textbook Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, written by the FAA, is supplied with the course.  This textbook can also be purchased through most bookstores or through websites like amazon.com.

Description:  Advanced Aviation Science covers the skills and background needed to make an airplane flight and prepare for a pilot license.  Students will learn about reading aeronautical charts, aircraft performance, airspace, weather interpretation, navigation systems and communication.   Aircraft safety and FAA regulations will also be covered.  Emphasis is on the critical thinking and problem solving skills that relate to science. Students enrolled in this course will be provided with opportunities to fly in a small aircraft.  This course includes a student EAA membership providing special benefits and aviation opportunities.   Field trips for this course may require a nominal fee for transportation and admissions.  The course is generally accepted as a Science Elective by secondary institutions, but not in place of biology, chemistry, physics, etc.  Advanced Aviation Science is a rigorous course that will prepare students to pass the FAA Private Pilot written exam.   A sample course lesson can be found at:  www.aeroscholars.com
